Record Meth Bust on Yacht off Coast of San Diego

SAN DIEGO ---- U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents made a record seizure of methamphetamine over the weekend in the waters off San Diego, officials said Monday.

Agents found 144 pounds of meth ---- the largest such seizure off the San Diego coast ---- about 12:30 p.m. Sunday after they boarded a 23-foot Bayliner just outside Mission Bay upon its return from Mexico, according to the agency.

The methamphetamine was discovered in a secret compartment below the deck, along with 10 pounds of cocaine, the CBP reported. The drugs have a combined estimated street value of $3 million.

The vessel was escorted to shore and the boater, a U.S. citizen whose name was not released, was turned over to customs agents.

Boating Under the Influence

SAN DIEGO - Authorities arrested a man Monday after he was rescued from his stranded sailboat offshore from San Diego.

A sailboat went dangerously close the shore and ran aground on a reef at Sunset Cliffs around 4:30 p.m.

San Diego lifeguards swam out to the boat and attempted to bring the only person aboard to shore, but he refused help.

"The rudder broke, and the keel was stuck in the reef, so he needed to be removed from the boat," said San Diego lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan.

When lifeguards brought the man to shore, San Diego police arrested him on suspicion of being drunk while boating.

There were no reports of injuries. The boat was later towed off the reef to Mission Bay, where it was impounded by authorities.
